What is Endo?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects the lives of over 176 million people with periods around the world. 1 in every 10 people with periods are affected by this disease where endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus involving other organs. This tissue is similar and responds similarly to monthly hormone fluctuations in the body like the inner lining of the uterus (the womb), called the endometrium. This causes inflammation and severe pain. In addition, those who are diagnosed with endometriosis may have painful bladder syndrome, digestive or gastrointestinal symptoms similar to a bowel disorder, as well as fatigue, tiredness or lack of energy, pelvic pain, painful intercourse and infertility. The cause of endometriosis is still unknown although many have been suffering for centuries. On average it takes 9 years for patients to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis and proper diagnosis requires laparoscopic surgery, which is a significant barrier to care. Recognizing the symptoms and advocating for their own health, patients face an uphill battle. The Minnesota Endo March is an opportunity to show them that Minnesota cares.
