Pre-Conference day (5/6/17: 9am-12pm) - Screening Participants for International Programs with Bill Frederick of Lodestone Safety
9am - 12pm. "Screening Participants for International Programs" Most international programs struggle with managing their participants pre-existing medical and mental health conditions under circumstances where there is a scarcity of appropriate resources near at hand and where removing or evacuating the participant is not simple or easy. A robust participant screening program can effectively reduce the number of such instances. However, concern for violating legal statutes or creating a greater duty of care often inhibits the objective analysis of participant’s medical and mental health histories. North American adventure based programs have developed some of the more comprehensive strategies but they do not fully account for a number of variables associated with international participants or international destinations. This session will survey the pertinent legal statutes and share some perspectives as to their applicability to your program or international programs in general. We’ll look at a multi-tiered system of potential components, approaches and procedures. Brief content presentations will be interspersed with small group screening scenarios.

Event Details

Join us for the 3rd Annual Gap Year Conference!  This year will once again be cozying up to the IECA conference in Denver, which starts officially on May 10th.  May 9th will be a marketing day for providers and attendees to take part in either the speed-dating Gap N Go event (for an additional fee), or to visit some local high schools in the Denver area.

This year's theme is Removing Obstacles - in the spirit of the Hindu deity, Ganesha - the intention is to remove obstacles and barriers to greater participation, especially with an emphasis on lower-income and improved diversity.  The Gap Year sits at a crucial time in student development and maturation, and we hope to see more students participating in Gap Years than ever before!

Organizer

American Gap Association, Taylor the Gap Consulting, Dianna Hahn Consulting

The American Gap Association is a nonprofit Standards and Professionalization Organization for Gap Years as recognized by the US Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission.  We work primarily to help spread the word about Gap Years by providing resources and information, as well as work to increase financial aid resources and improve the professionalization of the field.

Taylor the Gap is headquartered in Boulder, CO., and is run by Marion Taylor, an expert and experienced traveler as well as a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer.  Marion offers nationwide consulting services for all ages interested in taking their own Gap Year.

Kevin Hermann Copywriting is led by, shockingly, Kevin Hermann, a previous Gap Year Conference volunteer, copy editor, Gap Year taker, and expert speaker on the topic of Gap Years.

We also have a cadre of selfless volunteers that include:

Dianna Hahn - a phenomenally talented new mother who cut her teeth in this field as the Executive Director of Global Routes, a well-know expert in the NAIS community, and consultant.  Dianna has been leading the effort for the Gap Year Conference Presentations and we are lucky to work with her.

Jennifer Miller - an incredibly low-paid editor and collaborator with AGA, Boots N All, and the chief director for both the AGA Blog and the Open Source Curriculum project.

Madelaine Eulich - another previous Gap Year Conference volunteer, and recent addition to the Summer Search family in Boston - they are lucky to have her.
