The Amarillo Area Autism in Action Walk/5K Run is held to raise funds to benefit Helping Hands and to increase awareness about autism, its detection and treatment options.
Helping Hands has served the Amarillo Area and surrounding communities since 2010, serving a multitude of individuals and families. Each year, the number grows as more individuals are diagnosed and families within our community seek resources for early intervention as well as sustainable resources that transition to adulthood and last a lifetime.
The primary goal of helping Hands is to provide the services, resources, and services needed to families and individuals within our community who are challenged by a diagnosis of autism. We believe that all individuals with autism spectrum disorders do better when there is a touchstone within their community that delivers research-based services and support.
Such support gives them the opportunity to reach their individual potential and participate in family, school, and community towards a much higher quality of life. Providing such resources can be cost prohibitive for many families as insurance providers do not cover many of the costs associated with autism. Many families must pay out of pocket for critical resources that are many times life changing for their child.
We recognize that programs and individualized support must be cost effective so that parents can maximize limited funding available to access the much needed services for their child and provide services to all families regardless of their ability to pay. With autism occuring at a rate of 1 in 88 individuals, the needs continue to rise along with the costs associated with providing accessible and sustainable resources for all.
All participants will receive a T-shirt on the day of the event when they check in.
Awards will be given for the 5K race for overall male and overall female.
