Description

3MT® (3 Minute Thesis) is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland, Australia for research students. Postgraduate (PhD, MPhil, MRes) researchers to present their research verbally in just 3 minutes, with related content displayed on one PowerPoint slide.

  • Science and Engineering: 5th March 2018, 2-5pm

  • Arts: 6th March 2018, 2-5pm

  • MVLS: 7th March 2018, 2-5pm

  • Social Sciences: 8th March 2018, 2-5pm

Heats are organised by college on the dates listed above and will be held in the Gilchrist seminar room, at the back of the Gilchrist PG Club in the main University Building (look for the giant teacup). Please note that the tickets below are for registering as a competitor.

Three competitors from each heat will be awarded prizes of Amazon vouchers, and go through to the Grand Final on Friday 16th March 2018 in the Senate & Carnegie Rooms, 3-5pm. You must ensure that you are available on 16th March for the final as we cannot reschedule this. We cannot emphasise how important it is to ensure that you are free on this date before you sign up for the heats.The winner of the Grand Final will win a £1000 travel and research grant as well as the opportunity to take part in a national 3MT® competition. The runner up receives £500 and there is also a People's Choice Award (£100 Waterstones voucher).

If you don't know your title yet, please give a working title and we can confirm this closer to the date. Please note that registration below is for competitors only.

Why enter?

3MT® develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. Winners will be awarded research funds to pay for research and conference trip, books and other research expenses.

Students from any postgraduate year group can get involved, it's never too early and no topic is too obscure or too difficult! Again, please keep in mind on entering that you should ensure that you are available to take part in the Grand Final on 16th March as this cannot be rescheduled. And remember to SELECT THE DATE WHICH CORRESPONDS TO YOUR COLLEGE VIA THE DROP-DOWN MENU ABOVE. Best of luck with your preparations!
