Description

This event brings soil scientists and foresters together to learn of and discuss the interactions of soils and trees. The workshop consists of multiple field site stops to observe soil pits and tree growth related to them.

SITE 1 Natural regeneration with planted pines on un-restored Strip mine land, (45 minutes on-site; 8:15a-9:00a--Snacks/Refreshments--) (depart, 30 minutes travel 9:00a-9:30a)

SITE 2 Plantation on restored strip mine land Wet to Wet-Mesic flatwoods and upland hardwoods types (1 hour on-site; 9:30a-10:30a) (depart, 15 minutes travel; 10:30-10:45a)

SITE 3 Riparian development study along Strip mine lake Wet-mesic and Wet Ecotypes for erosion control, Somewhat poorly and Poorly drained restored soils. (45 minutes on-site; 10:45a-11:30a) LUNCH (11:30a-12:00p) (depart, 30 minutes travel; 12:00p-12:30p)

*SITE 4 Natural Comparison Site Flatwoods (1 Hour on-site; 12:30p-1:30p)(depart, 30 minutes travel; 1:30p-2:00p)

SITE 6 Forest Management Area

HOTEL Clean-up (5:00p-5:45p) (depart, 25 minutes travel; 5:45-6:10p)
