Join the Black Student Union of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) for our 39th Annual Black Consciousness Conference where the theme for this year is, “We RISE!". It is scheduled for Saturday, November 17th, 2018. Our scheduled speakers for this event include: Dr. Mumbi Seraki, Rizza Islam, ZaZa Ali, Tommy Johnson (Originals Nation), Funmilola Fagbamila, Mark Whitten, Dr. Jonathan Higgins, and Dr. Claud Anderson. We hope that you will join us, as we have an historic conference set where we will delve into the history of the Black Student Union at CSULB, and honor Sista Re'nee, owner of Shades of Afrika, and leaders with the BSU Lifetime Acheivement Award. Friday, November 16: USU Ballrooms (ABC)

  • 5:00pm - 6:00pm Registration

(This portion will include checking in folks who are attending the dinner. Attendees will be given one food ticket and one drink ticket. Attendees are welcome to sit as long as it does not specify that it is ‘Reserved’. Proceeds for the dinner will serve as donations for BSU’s needs (i.e. ABC Conference, ASB Ghana Trip, scholarships, etc.)

  • 6:00pm - 6:30pm Welcome & Opening Dance/Poetry: Kiki Metellus & Melanin Magic/?

(The dinner will begin with a welcome from BSU President, Kiki Metellus, to kick-off the 39th Annual Black Consciousness Conference, thank the attendees for coming, and . The welcome will transition into a performance by CSULB’s own Melanin Magic? and spoken word poetry by ? )

  • 6:30pm - 7:15pm Dinner/Roundtable Discussion

(After the performances, Kiki Metellus will announce the dinner options that are available. 2 tables will be dismissed at a time by a volunteer to form a line where the food will be served. Guided questions will be at the tables to encourage attendees to connect with one another.)

  • 7:15pm - 7:45pm Presentation of Black Consciousness Conference/CSULB Black Student Union/Alumni/High School & College Scholarships

(We will transition into our formal presentation for the dinner. Kiki Metellus will go into the history of the Black Consciousness Conference, the history of the Black Student Union, and Black student activism and leadership at CSULB. Following, Barry Thomas will discuss the importance of connecting Black students with Black alumni for support and resources outside the University. Kiki Metellus will continue on speaking about providing resources and present the ‘BSU Academic Excellence Scholarship’ to the high school and college students selected.)

  • 7:45pm - 8:00pm Intermission

  • 8:00pm - 9:15pm Group Discussion with Originals Nation & Mark Whitten on Real Estate

(This portion of the dinner will be directed by Originals Nation and give way to a discussion centered our real estate and wealth. This segment will give way to the Saturday portion of the conference. Q&A period will be included for the last 15 minutes of the segment.)

  • 9:15pm - 9:30pm Closing Remarks/Clean-Up


Saturday, November 17: USU Ballrooms (ABC)

  • 11:00am - NOON Doors Open/Registration/Black Carpet

(This portion will include doors opening and welcoming conference attendees. Conference volunteers should be getting ready to take their place throughout the day. Vendors should also be in their proper place. This conference will include raffles throughout, so attendees are welcome to hold onto their raffle tickets. Attendees are also welcome to take pictures on the Black Carpet & BSU Photo Backdrop. This a way to improve attendance at start of Conference!)

  • NOON - 2:00pm WE RISE Networking/Lunch

(The conference will begin with an opportunity for attendees to connect and network with our vendors and community organizations in attendance. Vendors will range from: artwork, clothing/accessories, non-profits, food/drink, and Black or Afrikan products. Throughout the conference we have discussed possibly having a LIVE DJ who can provide music that is family friendly. Ultimately, we do not want to officially start the speaking portion of the conference until after this networking portion of the conference. Reason being is that historically, the conference has always started out slow and usually has a light attendance the earlier we start. We are better off starting in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided by Mr. Tingling during this time. Small appetizers such as quinoa and arzo salad, turkey patties, raw vegetables, fruit, and drinks will be served.)

  • 2:00pm - 2:30pm Welcome: WE RISE!, CSULB BSU President, Kiki Metellus

(This portion will include Melanin Magic, open remarks by BSU President, as well as introduction of entire BSU Executive Board for 2017-18, as well as BSU advisors (Dr. Claybrook & Dr. Johnson). It will include the reading of the Preamble, the singing of the National Black Anthem, and the pouring of Libation. We will cover the history of the Black Consciousness Conference and BSU on campus. Then we will transition into our opening panel discussion and introduction of panelists.)

  • 2:30pm - 4:30pm WE RISE PANEL with Rizza Islam, ZaZa Ali, Funmilola Fagbamilla, Dr. Mumbi Seraki, and Dr. Jonathan Higgins

(This portion of the conference will essentially be the first speaking engagement for the event, with a opening keynote who has a profound and respected career of activism dedicated to black economics and POWER. The keynote will go an 1 Hour 30 Minutes at max, with a 30 Minutes Q&A period interactive with the audience.

  • 4:30pm - 5pm INTERMISSION/TRANSITION TO WORKSHOPS

(Encourage attendees to use the restroom during this time. Volunteers will be in the USU lobby area with workshop signs and ready to assist attendees to their workshop destination.)

  • 5pm - 6:50pm WE RISE: Workshop Series

    • Workshop #1: ORIGINAL WOMAN (USU Beach Auditorium) - ZAZA ALI

    • Workshop #2: LAND OWNERSHIP (USU 304) - ABC STAFF, SALIH MUHAMMAD & TAHARKA ANDERSON

    • Workshop #3: WEALTH ACCUMULATION THROUGH REAL ESTATE (USU 205) - MARK WHITTEN

(This portion of the conference will begin no longer than 20 minutes after the conclusion of the WE RISE Panel Discussion. Every year we have a workshop series where attendees can choose a workshop they would like to attend. These workshops serve as a more intimate setting where attendees can be apart of the conference more directly and engage the workshop leaders and presenters. Workshop presenters will be notified to ensure their presentations are interactive. This year’s workshop series will provide attendees the opportunity to attend at minimum two workshops. The workshop series overall will have TWO Sessions. Session ONE from 5pm to 5:50pm, INTERMISSION/ATTENDEES TRANSITION 10 Minutes, Session TWO from 6pm to 6:50pm.)

  • 7pm - 7:20pm Intermission - Refreshments/Vendors

(USU Ballrooms, Lobby, Courtyard, Food Court)

(This portion of the conference will be our Intermission for our attendees to enjoy Refreshments, Vendors, and our Live DJ. We will ensure that ALL attendees re-enter the USU Ballrooms to prepare for our evening keynote.)


  • 7:30pm - 8:00pm Black Consciousness Community Honor Award (Re’nee of Shades of Afrika) 15 Minutes Total, Originals Nation (Tommy Johnson) 20 Minutes Total, BSU President Introduces Evening Keynote (Dr. Claud Anderson) 10 Minutes Total.

  • 8:00pm - 9:00pm Evening Keynote: WE RISE! (USU Ballroom) Presented by Dr. Claud Anderson of POWERNOMICS.

  • 9:00pm - 9:30pm Interactive Evening Keynote Questions & Answers

  • 9:30pm - 10:00pm Farewell Pictures with Dr. Claud Anderson/Vendors/Dinner (To-Go Boxes)/Pack Up
