Join the Black Student Union of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) for our 38th Annual Black Consciousness Conference where the theme for this year is, “THE POWER OF US!". It is scheduled for Saturday, November 18th, 2017. Our scheduled speakers for this event include: Dr. Boyce Watkins, Dr. Andrea Moore, Tariq Nasheed, Tommy Johnson (Originals Nation), Sista Re'nee (Owner of Shades of Afrika) and Dr. Umar Johnson. More speakers will be announced within the next couple of weeks. We hope that you will join us, as we have an historic conference set where we will delve into the history of the Black Student Union at CSULB, and honor past Black Student Union Presidents and Leaders with the BSU Lifetime Acheivement Award. USU Ballrooms (ABC)

  • 11:00am - NOON Doors Open/Registration/Black Carpet

(This portion will include doors opening and welcoming conference attendees. Conference volunteers will be avaliable for any questions. Vendors will be avaliable. This conference will include short raffles throughout, so attendees are encouraged to hold onto their raffle tickets. Attendees are also welcome to take pictures on the Black Carpet & BSU Photo Backdrop)

  • NOON - 2:00pm The Power of Networking

(The conference will begin with an opportunity for attendees to connect and network with our vendors and community organizations in attendance. Vendors will range from: artwork, clothing/accessories, non-profits, food/drink, and Black or Afrikan products. The speaking portion of the conference will begin after this segment.)

  • 2:00pm - 2:30pm Welcome: The Power of Us, CSULB BSU President, Justin Bradley

(This portion will include Afrikan Drumming, open remarks by BSU President, as well as introduction of entire BSU Executive Board for 2017-18, as well as BSU advisor. It will include the reading of the Preamble, the singing of the National Black Anthem, and the pouring of Libation. We will cover the history of the Black Consciousness Conference and BSU on campus. Then we will transition into our opening panel discussion and introduction of panelists.)

  • 2:30pm - 4:30pm The Power of Culture: Discussion on Media, Politics, Economics, Propaganda, Social Movements. What Is Black Culture?

MODERATORS: President Justin Bradley & External Vice President Kiki Metellus

(This portion of the conference will essentially be the first speaking engagement for the event, with a strong panel of diverse black activists, scholars, and media personnel. The Discussion will be allotted to go 1 Hour 30 Minutes at max, with a 30 Minutes Q&A period interactive with the audience.

  • 4:45pm - 6:15pm Power Workshop Series

  • Workshop Title #1: The Power of Black Love, Presenter TBA Later. (USU Beach Auditorium)

  • Workshop Title #2: The Power of Mind, Body, Spirit, TBA Later. (USU Alamitos Bay)

  • Workshop Title #3: The Power of Financial Freedom, Presented By: Tommy Johnson (Originals Nation) (USU Ballroom/Only A & B)

(This portion of the conference will begin no longer than 20 minutes after the conclusion of the panel discussion. Every year we have a workshop series where attendees can choose a workshop they would like to attend. These workshops serve as a more intimate setting where attendees can be apart of the conference more directly and engage the workshop leaders and presenters. Workshop presenters will be notified to ensure their presentations are interactive.)

  • 6:15pm - 6:55pm Intermission - Refreshments/Vendors/Live DJ (USU Ballrooms, Lobby, Courtyard, Food Court)

(This portion of the conference will be our Intermission for our attendees to enjoy Refreshments, Vendors, and our Live DJ. ALL attendees will be required to re-enter the USU Ballrooms to prepare for our evening keynote and award ceremony.)

  • 7pm - 7:30pm Evening Keynote Introduction/Award Ceremony Recipients

(This portion will contain the presentation of 3 Award Recipients. 1) Afrikan Restoration Project 30 Years of Organizing in Long Beach. 2) $200 High School Scholarship Award 3) BSU Lifetime Achievement Award To Past BSU Presidents & Leaders.

  • 7:30pm - 9pm Evening Keynote: The Power of Us! (USU Ballroom) - Dr. Umar Johnson

  • 9pm - 9:30pm Evening Keynote Questions & Answers Period (Questions WIll Be Screened)

  • 9:30pm - 10pm Pictures with Dr. Umar Johnson/Vendors Pack Up/Dinner To Go

  • 10pm Farewell
