All 7th-12th grade students in Yolo County are invited to attend “Adulting 101: Life Skills for Teens” hosted by the City of of Woodland Public Library and Yolo County Office of Education

This free event will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 8:00-3:30 at the Yolo County Office of Education at 1280 Santa Anita Ct # 100, Woodland, CA 95776.

Adulting 101 kicks off with a welcome from Maria Arvizu-Espinoza, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services at Yolo County Office of Education followed by special guest speaker, author AS King. AS King has written books such as Me And Marvin Gardens, Dig, The Year We Fell From Space, Switch, and many more!

Our closing speaker is City of Woodland Mayor, Mayra Vega.

Free breakfast and lunch is provided courtesy of Jersey Mike's.

There will be 4 sessions and students can choose one introductory course per session to attend. Some courses are only offered once.

You Do You and Be Successful Too!—Woodland Community College

Learn about the resources available at Woodland Community College and how to make your student experience what you want it to be. Explore your interest, gain experience, and have fun all while working toward your degree. Will include a moment for a mindfulness meditation.

Adulting Life Hacks-Money 101—Yolo Federal Credit Union

Learn the difference between a savings and checking account, various payment methods, how to budget and why it is important, and the language of credit and how to build it.

Direct Your Future: Goal Setting for Success!—Megan Lehn

Without a plan, where will life take you? Goal setting is the best way to develop a road map for your future and make sure you are the one in the driver's seat. In this workshop, you will establish your values and create a vision based on them. Participants will develop their own life goals and a 90-day plan to set them into action. Goal setting is a commitment you make to yourself and the best way to direct your future!

How to Get a Job—Friday Night Live

Do's and Don'ts on filling out job applications, resumes and the interview process.

Standing Out When It Counts—UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program

Participants will understand how to respond to the UC personal insight questions. All 8 questions will be reviewed, allowing the student to make the best-informed decision about what 4 questions to select for themselves.

Learn reality-based self-defense, awareness, escape, evasion and preparedness skills at our self-defense class. Please wear workout friendly attire.

Start Networking: The One Trick You Need Now—Davis East Consulting

This workshop will focus on the process of networking and its relevance and importance to career development. Participants will learn about taking initiative and overcoming fear, information interviewing, as well as potential guideline to consider when using social networks, texting and email for networking purposes.

Public Speaking 101: Find Your Voice—4-H Youth Development Program

Students will find their voices by learning how to prepare and deliver speeches. Through interactive activities, students will evaluate famous speakers, learn basic public speaking skills, learn about different types of speeches and how to deliver them, and most importantly gain confidence in their speech giving abilities.

Before you know it, you'll be in charge of your own finances. Don't worry, this workshop outlines financial fundamentals like setting goals, making a budget, paying bills and other real-world skills to prepare you for financial independence.

Understanding Stress Management—Happy Heart Yoga

We have all heard the words "Don't Worry, Be Happy." In today's times, especially with all the changes in life, is it really possible to let go of our worries? Just hearing the word stress can bring chills down our spines. In this session we will get a better understanding of what stress is, what causes us stress, and how we can manage stress. By the end of the session we will be able to navigate stress that may occur with future life changes.

Regardless of what your future holds, you can be sure that taxes will play some small part of it. Our goal for this workshop is to help students understand the full process of their role in our income tax system from starting a job and filling out Form W-4 to how to read your paystub, to why we pay taxes, when we need to pay taxes, and how filing a tax return can result in money in your pocket.

Adulting can be stressful! In this workshop, Kristin Sky will teach you skills for managing stress, developing a positive outlook, and identifying resources to access mental health support. We’ll finish with a game of Mental Health Bingo to help identify ways to cope with stress, as well as to win some prizes!

Plant Therapy—Woodland Community College

We will learn how to care for succulents and create a succulent arrangement. Then we will talk about agriculture courses at WCC and potential career paths. Did you know that high school students can take college courses for free?!

Buttercream Flower Cupcakes—Zest West Bakery

Learn several techniques for making buttercream flowers for cupcakes and cakes. You'll have the opportunity to use multiple piping tips and tools to practice these techniques, as well as the opportunity to create your own design.

Paint and Plant—Woodland Public Library

Join us while we paint on a mini canvas and make a DIY terrarium that you can take home! All levels welcome. Our instructor, Sylvia will guide you, step by step.
