Description

New book reveals the incredible and inspiring true story of motherly love and sacrifice in Nazi-ruled Ukraine

344 Days Underground tells the true story of Etcia Goldberg, a young Jewish mother who fled Nazi persecution and survived the Holocaust by living in a dark, cold cave called Popowa Yama (Priest’s Grotto) with 37 other Jews, including her three young children. They lived in total darkness and extreme cold, with very little provisions.

Told for the first time in 75 years, Etcia’s story has been tenderly brought to life by her grandson, Valeriy Gritsiv,

a former doctor from Ukraine, who now lives near Atlanta, Georgia.

344 Days underground allows for a significant but overlooked female voice to finally be heard: Etcia Goldberg’s remarkable story began to unravel twenty years ago when American caver Chris Nicola was exploring an area in western Ukraine, where he found the haunting evidence of human habitation. It would take Nicola almost a decade of searching before he pieced together what had happened there. The story of the Priest’s Grotto survivors was told in the documentary No Place On Earth, released in 2013. However, Etcia’s individual story was not shared in the film, and her family have gone to great lengths to make sure it is never forgotten.

Her tale is unique, as she was the only woman who was head of a household in the cave, and risked her life regularly alongside the men to keep her children alive. She was only 36 years old when she emerged from the cave in 1944. We can learn a huge amount from Etcia’s self-sacrifice and determination to survive. It may be a story with a 75 year history, but it is just as powerful and poignant today.
