31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Weekend
Event Information
About this Event
The Morehouse NYC Alumni Association is proud to announce the launch of the 2021 MLK Day Scholarship fundraiser weekend. For 30+ years, the Morehouse NYC Alumni Association has helped countless students get to and through college.
Each year the chapter kicks off its programming and fundraising campaigns with an annual scholarship breakfast on MLK Day. Although the pandemic may keep us from gathering in person, we are excited to say this time-honored tradition will continue virtually.
JANUARY 15TH - "Rush Hour" HBCU Networking
We will be kicking off MLK Weekend with a digital networking mixer to break up the weekly rush. This event will be open to all participants, and we encourage current college students and alumni alike to participate.
JANUARY 16TH - "Switching Lanes" College & Career Recruiting Fair
1:00PM - 3:30PM
On Saturday, January 16th the alumni chapter will be hosting a day of recruiting for prospective college students interested in HBCUs and participants looking for career opportunities. Students with an interest in attending Morehouse College will have the chance to meet with our local and national recruiting team as well as members of the admissions department. Also, on that Saturday we will give current students and alumni the chance to meet with corporate recruiters who are offering career opportunities.
Throughout the day we will also have several workshops and panel discussions which include:
Financial Wellness (1:05PM - 1:30PM)
Led by a professional financial advisor, this panel is designed to give everyone a boost when it comes to their knowledge of personal finance. Whether you are just getting started, mid-career, or setting up for retirement this workshop is for you.
Emerging Leaders (1:30PM - 2:00PM)
If you could have a chance to learn from the best leaders of your generation, would you? If so, this may be the panel discussion for you. “Emerging Leaders” is a panel of people who are on the “come up” in their company, their field of study, or in their community. This group is filled with innovators, mavericks, and people who inspire change. Join us if you are looking to pick up some tips on how to influence change, amplify your message, and take your team to the next level.
Mastering the Startup (1:30PM - 2:00PM)
In today’s day and age, technology, and the abundance of information has made it easier than ever for people to start their business enterprises. The range of new ideas and companies popping up is almost dizzying; there are social media companies, app and web-based businesses, tech startups, and more. “Mastering the Startup” is a panel designed to give you insight from people who have started their ventures. The advice you can ever get is from people who have walked the path that you are looking to take and these founders are “walking the walk.”
Switching Lanes (2:00PM - 2:30PM)
When it comes to your job/career….when is the right time to say when? Is it your passion that is calling you away from the desk and into the community? Is it your business that is finally starting to take off? Is it your current job, that no longer seems like the right fit for growth and upward mobility? If you are asking yourself any of these questions this is the panel discussion for you. “Switching Lanes” is a panel led by people who have recently made big career changes and that have tips to help you make your change. Sometimes making the change means beefing up your resume or polishing off your interview skills. Other times it means building that Linkedin profile that you’ve been avoiding and others it can mean cleaning up the social media post you forgot about. Whatever it is, we will try to cover it in this presentation!
Fireside Keynote Presentation (2:30PM - 3:00PM)
DK Bartley; Chief Diversity Officer of Moody's Corporation
With 2020 being such a tumultuous year, DK will share his perspective on diversity in the workplace, the shift in corporate America's approach to equity, and what the world may look like for young professionals of color moving forward.
JANUARY 18TH - "Pursuing the Dream" MLK Day Awards Ceremony
The finale for the scholarship weekend will be a virtual award ceremony on January 18 (MLK Day).
