This is 3-week class series beginning on March 4th and ending on March 18th. Classes are on Saturdays each week from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the same location in Oregon City. What is Rent Well?
Rent Well is a class designed to help people find and keep affordable rental housing. The class is free for Clackamas County residents who have low to moderate incomes. Rent Well can be helpful for renters of all experience levels.
Rent Well graduates earn a certificate of completion that many landlords recognize. Graduates can also use the Rent Well Landlord Guarantee Fund for up to 18 months after graduation. This fund offers to pay your landlord up to $1,000 if you move out in the first year and there are unpaid costs that your security deposit won't cover.
What will I learn in class?
Class topics include:
- Affordable Housing Options
- Understanding Landlord Expectations
- Housing Laws and Tenant Rights
- Budgeting Basics
- Property Maintenance
- Rental Rules and Agreements
- Professional Communication
We also focus on tools you can use to get approved for housing even if your background includes things like:
- Poor or No Credit
- Short or No Rental History
- Criminal History
- Low Income
- Unstable Employment
- Money Owed to A Past Landlord
Can Rent Well help me pay my rent?
No. Please call Clackamas County's Housing Rights and Resources program at (503) 650-5750 if you need help paying rent.
Am I guaranteed to get into housing after I take Rent Well?
No. Rent Well does not own or manage any housing. We cannot guarantee that other landlords will approve your application.
What we can do is help you to understand the reasons why a landlord might deny your application. Once you know what these reasons are, we can help you come up with a customized plan to help you get approved. As a graduate, you can also use the Landlord Guarantee Fund, which may make some landlords more willing to rent to you.
Do I have to come to all three classes?
You must come to all three classes to complete the program and get a graduation certificate. Because we build on information from the previous class each week, you will not be able to continue in the class series if you miss either of the first two classes. If you have to miss the last class for any reason, you will not get your certificate until you attend a make-up class.
What types of transportation can I use to get to class?
There is parking on site and a bus stop nearby. If needed, we can provide bus tickets or gas cards to help you get to class.
Why can't I see the exact class location?
For privacy and safety reasons, we don't want people to show up for class without registering. We will give you the location information after we confirm your registration.
Is the space wheelchair accessible?
Is food allowed in class?
Yes. We will provide breakfast and lunch, but you can bring your own food if you want to.
Can I bring a friend or family member to class with me?
Unregistered guests are not allowed. If someone wants to come to class with you, they must register for the class. Please let us know if this is a problem and we will try to help you find a solution.
Is childcare provided?
Help with childcare is available on request. Please let us know as soon as possible if this is something you need.
Do you teach classes in languages other than English?
Classes are taught in English unless otherwise stated. Please let us know if you need an interpreter.
We also teach some classes in Spanish. Please call (503) 650-5647 for more information about Spanish classes.
What if I have special needs?
Please let us know about any special needs you have when we contact you to confirm your registration.
