Event description

Description

Mark VanderVinne will be teaching a 3-Day Landscape Painting Workshop at the Chesterton Art Center August 28-30 from 9-5 each day. The cost is $260, with members of the Chesterton Art Center receiving a $30 discount. A supply list will be provided once registration is complete. Here is the class description -

Nature is beautiful, but chaotic. Learning to see things accurately and be able to simplify them into a coherent piece is a must for the landscape artist. This workshop will break down the elements of landscape painting into simplified chunks, allowing the student to work each day on aspects that help create a powerful painting. You will learn how to use shape, light, value and color to create strong compositions as well as feeling and mood within your work. Working from your own photo references, you will learn how to simplify and redesign the elements to create a more compelling painting. Some time will be spent outside to discuss lighting and seeing. Mark will use demonstrations, critiques, discussions and one-on-one instruction to help you push through your challenges and reach the next level of your work. Topics covered are:

Day 1: Designing a Painting

- What Makes a Good Subject?

- Creating A Strong Composition

- Telling the Eye Where to Go

Day 2: Capturing Light and Depth

- Understanding Light Quality

- The Value of Value

- Creating Depth (So One Can Visually Walk into Your Painting)

Day 3: Creating Mood

- Keying in a Painting

- Making Color Work

- The Importance of Edges

The workshop is open to all skill levels. The main focus is in oil painting, though all mediums are welcome.
