Description

Second English Pronunciation Symposium, Bangladesh: Issues and Practices (2-EPS-BPI)

The second English Pronunciation Symposium, Bangladesh: Issues and Practices (2-EPS-BIP) will be held at Ghorashal Pilot High School, Palash, Narsingdi on 20th October 2017. The organizers are Volunteers Association of Bangladesh (VAB) and Zobeda & Amin’s mobile school (ZAMOSC).

Aims:

The aims of these annual symposiums, until further notice, will be to (a) increase awareness among English learners in Bangladesh, mainly in the rural areas, about our English mispronunciation problems, and (b) address these problems.

Background:

Besides the many universities, both private and public, which run undergraduate and post graduate programs in ELT, there are several very highly motivated private groups, clubs and trainers in different parts of Bangladesh which are engaged in teaching Native Bengali Speakers to speak fluent English. Some of these groups may not know that Bangalis have any pronunciation problems for which their members continue speaking in an accent which non-native Bengali speakers may not always understand. There are some groups who are aware of these problems but do not know how to overcome them or they think that it takes too much time, money to remedy their problems. But there are also some trainers in Bangladesh outside the capital cities Dhaka and Chittagong, who know how to help their learners improve their English pronunciation and are helping them to acquire an intelligible accent which can be understood by one and all both within and outside Bangladesh. But due to resource limitations these trainers cannot spread their know-how, technical knowledge and skills and train English learners outside their immediate villages and towns. Therefore, learners in other parts of Bangladesh do not get the benefit of their training.

Through these annual symposiums we hope to bring together all these different groups at a common venue each year, where they can all exchange their views and experiences and learn from each other.

Call for paper presentations:

We are hereby inviting proposals for 20 minute presentations on any topic related to difficulties in the teaching and learning of English Pronunciation in the Bangladeshi context from researchers, teachers, trainers, students, professionals and other English learners. Intending presenters are requested to send a 1-word title, a 250- word abstract and a 40-word bio data to the organizers by the due date

Presentations may be made either in Bengali or English. Those who have not previously presented at such national conferences but wish or have something to say are strongly encouraged to submit their abstracts. Research papers on English Pronunciation teaching/learning in Bangladesh, the results of which may have wide application and benefit many teachers/learners in Bangladesh, are particularly welcome. Non-researchers may discuss their problems, their experiences, and suggest solutions to problems they have faced for comments by others.
