Event description

Description

Join the American Friends of Attingham for a tour of the extraordinary art installations in the Second Avenue Subway, led by Cheryl Hageman, MTA Arts & Design.

When the New York City Subway opened in 1904, its founders declared that the railway was a “great public work” where every design element should show respect for customers and enhance the experience of travel through beauty and efficiency. Working to uphold these design standards initiated more than 100 years ago, MTA Arts & Design carries forward the belief by commissioning exemplary works of art that are part of a rich heritage.

As part of this monumental addition to the NYC Transit system opened in 2017, the four new stations prominently feature contemporary artwork by Chuck Close, Sarah Sze, Vik Muniz, and Jean Shin. These ambitious projects use porcelain tile, intricate mosaics, ceramic and glass to delight riders and define the stations. Hear the stories behind these vibrant works that celebrate transportation and city life.

The tour will begin at the bottom of the main escalator in the 96 St-2 Av station (Q) and will conclude at the Lexington Av/63 St station (F,Q). Please bring a Metrocard for travel between stations. There will be approximately 10 blocks of walking within the stations.
