The 2nd Annual Winter Writing Festival planning is underway and NEW this year is an Speaker Series featuring Kent native Jason Prufer who authored: "Small Town, Big Music" and Award winning Author Angela Johnson!
Writing workshops will be scheduled at locations all around town, The WICK Poetry Center from KSU will again be leading a poetry slam, a Story Walk is being planned and more!

EcoPoetry-Water, Water Everywhere: In this 90-minute, topic-specific ecopoetry workshop, you will learn the difference between nature poetry and eco-poetry. The workshop features writing exercises via YouTube examples of various water impacts, poems to inspire your creativity, and a round-robin reading.
Finding the Extra in the Ordinary-A Craft Talk on Poetry: Learn how to notice the poetry always around us, and how to take note of what you notice, through examples and writing prompts.
From Writer to Author- Book Marketing Strategies: Led by Nancy Christie, author of Rut-Busting Book for Authors, this workshop will help you learn how to generate interest for your book from the media, booksellers, and readers in this marketing workshop. No matter where you are in the publishing process, from the pre-publication stage to the post-publication stage and beyond, you'll learn how to generate buzz for your book.
Mindful and Meditative Journaling: In this workshop, you'll earn how to find and use your "Power" word, how to be Mindful by NOT being mindful, and so many more helpful tips to make journaling part of your everyday life!
Mystery Writing:Learn to write a mind-boggling mystery in this exciting workshop, only at the Winter Writing Festival. Through the use of plot devices, setting, and scattering of clues, you'll learn how to lead your readers on a thrilling chase to a satisfying conclusion.
Netiquette: Through lectures, handouts, and exercises led by an expert with 15 years of technical writing experience, you'll learn to avoid the most common errors in written English!
The Bootleg MFA: This workshop is for poets that are looking for ways to hone their craft and establish themselves creatively. Come discuss your goals, how to establish a successful writing routine, and resources to improve and publish your work.
Writing Comic Books for Fun: You'll learn how you too can turn your love of comic books into a rewarding (if not financially lucrative) sideline as comic book creator at the Writing Comic Books for Fun and (Very Little) Profit, only at the Winter Writing Festival.
Writing Speculative Fiction: Learn how to strike a balance between realism and fabulism during a discussion of the craft of speculative fiction and have the opportunity to work on their own writing in the genre or experiment with it for the first time. There will also be a discussion of major and minor tropes within the genre and how to avoid writing cliches.
Writing Toward Peace: This year marks the 50th anniversary of the shootings at Kent State University's campus on May 4th, 1970. As part of the commemoration of the event, the Wick Poetry Center is collaborating with the May 4th Visitors' Center to put on the workshop Writing Towards Peace. This workshop will use expressive writing prompts to connect to the social context surrounding the events on our campus. Participants will also explore how they can use their own voices as tools for peace and reconciliation.
