Event description

Description

Please send your youth and mental health supervisors — along with Native Youth from your tribe — to the 2nd Annual Intertribal Youth Suicide Prevention Summit, where Native Youth can talk about the issues surrounding suicide and its long-lasting effects on tribal communities.

Embrace Your Sacredness. Choose Life.

Tribal Youth have the opportunity to bring awareness to and help one another in understanding the impacts of suicide upon us all. Native youth from ages 13-24 are invited to the Summit where they will be able to participate in open conversations around the negative impacts of suicide in tribal communities and ways to fight back against it. Youth will also participate in games and cultural activities with other Native youth.

Suicide continues to haunt our Native Peoples, and it affects our communities more than any other race in the U.S: The rate of suicide among Native Youth is more than double the rate of any other ethnic population.

Among Native Peoples, suicide rates peak during adolescence and young adulthood, and then decline later in age. This trend is opposite from other racial and ethnic groups. That’s why it is important for our Native Youth to come together now and become leaders on this issue for the future.

Youth are standing up to say, “NO MORE! LIFE MATTERS. YOUR LIFE MATTERS.”

Details about the Summit

Native Youth will have the opportunity to hear from and meet Native leaders, experts, and other guests from around the Nation, to learn how to support one another and understand the impacts we all face together.

Each group is limited to 8 youth and up to 2 adults (mental health supervisors). Each group must include at least one mental health supervisor. Two-day tickets for youth or mental health supervisos are $150 each.

The Swinomish Youth Council is honored to be able to host the Summit, to share love and hope through their culture, and to lead trainings that will help Native Youth:

  • Foster leaders of tomorrow
  • Identify tools to make choices
  • Find and embrace their sacredness
  • Build their futures
