2nd Annual Faith in Reform Summit: Working for Criminal Justice Reform in U...
Event Information
Description
Join us for our 2nd Annual Faith in Reform Summit! This day-long gathering is for all activists, advocates, community members, students, professionals and others who are working for Criminal Justice Reform in Utah.
This past January, the first ever Faith in Reform mini-Summit, held at Salt Lake Community College's Taylorsville Campus, was such a positive experience that the event planners have decided to go for it again in 2016! One major bit of feedback we received about last year's "mini-Summit" was that it didn't really need to be quite so "mini." We have slightly expanded our format, to allow for slightly longer workshops and to give all attendees a chance to check out all offered workshops. We're also holding this next Summit in Ogden, to accomodate the many activists and criminal justice issues in Weber County.
Major topics you can expect to hear about at the 2016 Faith in Reform Summit include:
Human Trafficking in Utah (Workshop 1): Led by Journey of Hope of Salt Lake City, this workshop will discuss the landscape of human trafficking in Utah, and the work being done to help those affected. Attendees will also learn about pending human trafficking bills in the state legislature.
The School-to-Prison Pipeline (Workshop 2): Hosted by the Racially Just Utah coalition, this workshop aims to raise awareness about the School-to-Prison pipeline, and what it looks like in our own state. Legislative and local solutions will also be discussed!
Justice Reinvestment (Workshop 3): What’s happening with Utah's big reform effort? This segment will be a panel discussion, including Q&A, with state Justice Reinvestment Initiative leaders. We will talk about the current status of JRI, as well as new reforms to take place during the 2016 legislative session.
Indigent Defense: Can we make the system work? (Workshop 4) This breakout will be hosted by the ACLU of Utah, discussing the problems with Utah’s county-by-county public defense system, and how to work for positive reform through advocacy.
