Event description

Description

At TGI Network of Rhode Island, our mission is to serve the needs of the transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex communities in Rhode Island through advocacy, vital support services, and a strong, connected community network.

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, we will commemorate the Transgender Day of Visibility, an international day of recognition for the strength and resilience of our community, with our Second Annual Empowerment Breakfast!

We excited to invite you to join us as we honor the work that is being done in our community, enjoy a meal provided by Amos House’s More than a Meal Catering, and present awards to a community member and an ally who have, through their advocacy and ongoing commitment, improved the lives of transgender Rhode Islanders.

This year, our award recipients are Mandy LeComte and Justice Gaines. As a Burrillville school social worker, Mandy has been a tireless advocate and ally to her transgender and gender diverse students, ensuring that faculty and staff are properly trained to meet the needs of their diverse student body and that students are fully supported in school. Justice has been and continues to be a beacon for the transgender and gender diverse community and an outspoken advocate for justice and equality through zir work with Rhode Island Jobs With Justice, Direct Actions for Rights and Equality and Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM), as a driving force behind the Providence Community Safety Act, and as a candidate for Providence City Council.

In addition to our annual empowerment awards, this year we are excited to announce our Gwendolyn Spencer Legacy Award to honor a longstanding member of the Rhode Island transgender community who has tirelessly advocated and created improved experiences for more than a decade. Jayeson Watts has led the majority of trans related-related policy wins for over fifteen years, often with little support. Such wins include trans health insurance inclusion, accessible correct drivers licenses and birth certificates for trans people, and more. While we will use the breakfast to introduce this award, we will present this award during PrideFest 2019.
