Twenty-eighth Annual Child Abuse and Prevention Forum
Circumstances that Increase the Risk of Abuse and Neglect

Sponsor: Northwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

You will receive a confirmation of your registration. It is necessary that you bring it with you to ensure your seat, lunch and continuing education certificate.

You must attend entire conference and turn in evaluation to receive continuing education credit.

Members of the Planning Committee represent the following organizations: Prevent Child Abuse Lake County, Chicago State University, City Colleges of Chicago - Indiana University Northwest ~ Purdue University Calumet and The University of St. Francis, Sigma Theta Tau International-Alpha and Mu Omega chapters, AHEC

Continuing Nursing Education:

This activity will be submitted to the Ohio Nurses Association for approval to award contact hours. The Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91) is an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Dr. Seary is currently working at La Rabida. Psychological Consequences of Alcohol Abuse and Addiction on the Family System

1:00-2:15 Bullying: Strategies to break the cycle and increase civility

Patricia Cunningham, MSN, RN & Ellen Hennessy-Harstad, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, CPN

Ms. Cunningham has been a school nurse for twenty years and is currently Director of Nursing for the Merrillville School Corporation. Dr. Hennessy is a FNP with Community Health Net and a Certified Pediatric Nurse.

2:15-2:30 Break

2:30-3:45 What violence does to the children and families

Grace Hobson, MACC, LPC is the Deputy Director of Haven House Inc. Haven House, Inc., founded in 1983 and located in Hammond, Indiana is a 24-hour emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their dependents. Ms. Hobson cares for women and families in acute crisis.

3: 45 PM—Turn in Evaluations and receive continuing education certificate

In accordance with American Nurses Credentialing Center requirement, we would like to make you aware of all potential conflicts of interests. This educational activity’s planners and presenters have indicated they have no bias or conflict of interest.

Sponsorship: The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) has contributed to the cost of this continuing education activity.

Lunch: Lunch provided at no cost to the nurses who preregister for the conference. Students are responsible for own meals.

Criteria for Successful Completion:

Criteria for successful completion include attendance at the entire event and submission of a completed evaluation form.


The purpose of this educational activity is to increase awareness of nurses in identifying abuse, and for nurses to apply trauma-informed care during interactions with children and families in order to prevent or reduce the trauma from abuse and neglect.


This is a free program. Registration is required to attend. It will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. The conference is limited to the first 75 Nurses and 75 Nursing Students
