2016 Announcement and call for papers
We are pleased to announce our 28th annual conference, to take place November 10-12 in historic Cap Haïtien, site of both the Battle of Vertières that ensured the end of slavery in Haiti and the great monument to Haiti’s continuing existence, Citadelle la Ferrière. Conference activities will take place at Auberge Villa Cana.
Nearby places of interest include the resort beaches LaBadie and Cormier Plage; the Vertières historic site; Bois Caiman site of the uprising that led to the successful revolution; King Henry Christophe’s Palais Sans Souci and above it the Citadelle. There is the charming city itself, with its market plazas and the central Place d’Armes with its statue to proto-revolutionary Makandal, and bordered on the west side by the historic Notre Dame Cathedral. In the time of King Henry the city and surrounding countryside had many schools and the tradition of education is lively today. There are highly-regarded primary and secondary schools as well as college and university level institutions. Several of these latter are co-sponsoring the conference. Their faculty and students involved in advance planning and the November events.
