AFTA MISSION

  • In 2017, Arts for the Aging, Inc. (AFTA) celebrates its 29th year and its 27th annual tennis tournament, the AFTA Cup
  • Founded in 1988, AFTA is an award-winning social service organization that engages older adults in health improvement and life enhancement through frequent, professionally led, and participatory programs in all manner of the arts.
  • Our primary focus is on older adults living with aging-related physical and cognitive impairments in 26 community and residential care settings throughout the Greater Washington D.C. area
  • Workshops are designed to improve mental and physical health, longevity and overall quality of life
  • AFTA is the D.C. region's leading social service organization dedicated to combating isolation and spreading joy to seniors who need it most through frequent participation in the arts

PROGRAMS

  • AFTA will this year engage over 800 older adults, primarily those with physical and cognitive impairments, in all manner of weekly and bi-weekly arts programs
  • AFTA trains, in our nationally recognized best practices, and supports a faculty of professional teaching artists who engage seniors in painting, drawing, dance, music, storytelling, poetry, art history, creative writing, expressive arts, and musical theatre -- arts experiences that spark memory and imagination, lift spirits, and ignite social bonds
  • Children take part in intergenerational workshops, learning from the knowledge of elders, and giving older adults an emotional boost -- bridging the ages and creating stronger communities

SUPPORT

  • Gifts to AFTA help to sustain high-quality arts programs that improve the lives of older adults who need it most
  • AFTA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, offering most services free of charge; donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law
