About this event
We are pleased to announce that our 25th Annual Operator's BBQ at the San Xavier Mining Laboratory will be held on Saturday, April 24th from 10 AM to 2 PM.
This is a fun event held every year to bring students, MGE staff and faculty, industry professionals, and their families and friends together. New UA SME officers will be officially appointed, and we will provide an update on chapter activities as we would at a normal SME Tucson dinner meeting.
Our event will look different than years past due to COVID-19 risk mitigation efforts. We will be eating outdoors at covered tables to accommodate social distancing. Well-maintained hand sanitizer stations and restrooms will be available. We ask that you perform a self check prior to attending. If you are feeling even marginally unwell we ask that you do NOT attend the event for the safety of others. We also ask that you check your temperature before leaving your home the day of the event. If you have a temperature over 100.4 °F we ask that you do NOT attend the event for the safety of others. If for any reason you are unable to attend, refunds are available, or the registration fee can be accepted as a donation to the chapter. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have a hard limit of 100 maximum attendees. If we reach this limit the Eventbrite page will be closed at that time.
Masks must be worn at all times except when eating!
This event will primarily showcase the new decline of the underground mine. This has been a massive research endeavor for the University, that has been under construction since the Fall. We may also be providing tours of the other sections of the underground student mine. If deep-level tours are held--please only register for these if you are physically able to climb up and down ladders in tight passages and are not claustrophobic.
Food options will be catered by a local BBQ restaurant. We will be eating great food while also supporting local business! Tickets are divided into a few groups, so please try to find the correct one! Children 12 and under are free! Tickets can NOT be purchased at the door.
If you have any additional questions, please contact the Senior Vice President, Kerst Kingsbury, via email at kerstk@email.arizona.edu or by phone at (971) 240-7406. We look forward to seeing you!
Note: Details of the event are subject to change.
FAQs
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
We have ample parking available at the mine, and we will have people stationed to direct you. Getting to the mine is relatively easy--exit I-19 at Sahuarita Road and head west until the road T-s into Mission Road. Turn right and look for Ocotillo Ranch Road after one mile on the left. Turn left and look for a monument sign on the right with a red and blue gate; this is the SX Mine!
If any students need a ride to the SX or do not have their own means of transportation, please reach out to Kerst Kingsbury at kerstk@email.arizona.edu and we will find a carpooling option for you.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
