PURPOSE: This conference is designed to update primary care physicians, nurses, and support staff on recent advances in the management of lower gastrointestinal diseases that are commonly seen in a primary care practice. Information presented is intended to enhance clinical competence in the office management and differential diagnosis of selected colon and rectal diseases and may include initial management as well as guidelines to assist in determining when referral to specialty consultants is indicated.

OBJECTIVES:
SESSION I
• Discuss the anatomy of the colon and anorectum
• Describe the causes and treatment of anorectal pain
• Review treatment of pilonidal disease
• Discuss management of condyloma and intraepithelial neoplasia caused by HPV infections
SESSION II
• Describe the diagnosis and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome
• Discuss evaluation and treatment of patients with fecal incontinence
• Review biosynthetic material and surgery for incisional parastoma hernia
• Identify new medical treatment options for infl ammatory bowel disease
SESSION III
• Discuss new chemotherapy agents in the management of colorectal liver metastases
• Review the role of the interventional radiologist in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases
• Describe surgical management of colorectal liver metastases
• Discuss treatment options for recurrent rectal cancer
• Identify the causes, symptoms and treatment options for patients with anal canal cancer
