Carl Monroe (February 20, 1960 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – April 27, 1989 in San Jose, California) was a professional American football player who played running back for the San Francisco 49ers from 1983 to 1987.
Carl Monroe attended Overfelt High School from 1975 to 1978. During his time here, he was an outstanding football and track athlete. Carl was selected as the outstanding running back in the league and was the league and CCS 300 meter hurdle champion. He graduated in 1978 then went on to star at Gavilan College where he led the league in rushing and all purpose yardage despite being only 5’8” and 170 pounds. He did not let his height and weight hold him back. Carl, a native of Pittsburg, was selected all-WAC while leading the nation in all-purpose running and kickoff return average as a senior at the University of Utah 1982. He played in the Blue-Gray Game and Senior Bowl. Monroe’s four-year NFL career was spent with the 49ers. He joined the team as a free agent in 1983. He was not taken in the NFL draft because of his size. The high point of Carl’s career was catching a 35 yard pass that gave the 49er’s their first
touchdown in their 38-16 Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1985.
Carl never forgot where he came from. He would always give back to Overfelt by giving his time, cash or bringing shoes and sports equipment from the 49ers to give to our athletes. Carl also gave an annual scholarship to the outstanding senior football player who was planning on attending college. He would come to the spring sports assembly and present the scholarship in person. He really believed in giving back to the community and to the people who helped him succeed.
Because of his generosity and setting an example of success due to achievement and encouragement, The Overfelt Booster Club proudly sponsors the Annual Carl Monroe Memorial Golf Tournament to give back to the school and help our students succeed and be all they can be. Our hopes are that this will encourage all students to understand that nothing is impossible and to reach for the stars but to never forget where they came from and that if they can give back just a little of what they got, they can change someone’s life for the better. Pay it forward!
