Event description

Description

As part of our 250th anniversary celebrations, we are proud to welcome a living legend of Leeds literature, Tony Harrison, to the library for the first time…

The first appearance of Tony Harrison’s Selected Poems changed the entire landscape of British poetry. Not only did Harrison reclaim the forms of English verse and make them available to a new generation of poets, not only did he show us that working-class experience deserves to be honoured like any other – he won back a huge audience for poetry, one which had almost ceased to engage with it. He did so by writing some of the most powerfully affecting poems of the last fifty years’. (Don Patterson)
