Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation, Inc.
The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation was established in 1997 to research, preserve and celebrate the early civil rights and African American history of Northern Virginia. In 1915, African American citizens in Falls Church, Virginia established the first rural branch of the NAACP. The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation works to raise awareness of the contributions of African Americans and other cultures to the development of Falls Church, Fairfax County, and the United States, by disseminating information and hosting community events. African Americans have been an integral part of the local history of Northern Virginia in slavery and in freedom. The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation conducts research into this history that has been lost, hidden, forgotten or left out of our textbooks. Annual programs include the Tinner Hill Blues Festival; Giving Voice: Heritage Tour; Dr. E. B. Henderson "Dear Editor" Contest which encourages secondary school students to think critically and write persuasively. Please join us in celebrating our community's rich, diverse and vibrant history.
