24EQ Conference presents Peter Salovey & Joshua Freedman...

How was “emotional intelligence” discovered?
What does it mean for academia – and for the rest of us?

In 1990, Peter Salovey and John Mayer wrote a paper that described how emotions could actually be part of intelligence.  While the origins of EI go back to Darwin and before, for the first time, this paper outlined how emotional intelligence could meet the academic criteria for “intelligence.”

Salovey, now Provost at Yale University, and Joshua Freedman, COO of the world’s most extensive network of emotional intelligence practitioners (and organizer of 24EQ), will discuss their perspectives and work in this fascinating discipline.  Participants will be welcome to add questions, and topics will include:

  • How did the concept of emotional intelligence first arise?
  • Is “EI” or “EQ” really that important?  Why is there so much interest?
  • Can emotional intelligence be improved?
  • What does the “Third Decade of Emotional Intelligence” hold in store for this work (90s, 2000s, 2010s)

To close the session, Freedman will share some new research comparing managers and senior managers globally, showing that skill in "Pursuing Noble Goals" (from the Six Seconds Model) is much higher for senior leaders.  Together with all participants in the session, we will consider the implication of these findings.
