A celebration of the 246th birthday of the U. S. Marine Corps and "Last of the First" Salute to 1st Marine Division WW II combat veterans.

About this event

1st Marine Division Association (FMDA) and Camp Pendleton Historical Society (CPHS) cordially invite you to join us as we celebrate the 246th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps and salute the World War II combat veterans of the 1st Marine Division.

This event is a celebration for all Marines (active duty, Reserve, retired, veteran) and their spouses and friends of the U.S. Marine Corps. The celebration takes place on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The event includes the following:

  • Pre-Ceremony Cocktail Hour (5 p.m. - 6 p.m.)
  • Birthday Ceremony (6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.)
  • Dinner (6:45 p.m. - 8 p.m.)
  • "Last of the First" Salute (8 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.)

A special part of the event is the "Last of the First" Salute, a tribute to 1st Marine Division World War II combat veterans. Those veterans will toast with a drink from a bottle of 1920s Joseph Etournaud & Company Extra Grand Fine Champagne 1st Grand Cru Cognac, set aside in 1944 by 14 surviving Marines from the 1942 battle of Guadalcanal. Originally, this “Last of the First” bottle was intended to be opened by the last survivor among the Marines and Sailors who served in combat with the 1st Marine Division during World War II. Donate to Sponsor a Marine Corps World War II Combat Veteran

FMDA and CPHS are raising money to pay for transportation and lodging expenses for 1st Marine Division World War II combat veterans and/or their escorts to travel from across the Country to attend this event. Your donation of $1,500 helps to defray the transportation and lodging expenses for these honored WW II veterans. You can donate by selecting the “Sponsor WW II Marine Combat Veteran and/or Escort” choice under “Tickets”.

Attire

Attire for men is respective Service Dress uniform, formal attire with miniature medals, or coat and tie. For women, it is Service Dress uniform or cocktail dress.

Hotel Accommodations

Rooms are available at the Holiday Inn Carlsbad (2725 Palomar Airport Rd, Carlsbad, Calif.) for Nov. 5 and 6. The group rate is $119.00 and the group code is MCB. Please contact the Holiday Inn at 760.438.2725 to make your reservation. Cut-off date for hotel reservations is Oct. 29, 2021.

Organizer of 246th U.S. Marine Corps Birthday Celebration and "Last of the First" Salute

Camp Pendleton Historical Society (CPHS) is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich and colorful history of the land that is now Camp Pendleton.  Our interests span the entire history of the region to include prehistoric times; native American culture; the Spanish mission era; the rancho story; and finally, the United States Marine Corps ownership since 1942. CPHS supports the historical programs onboard Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton including but not limited to the Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores Ranch House, Las Flores Adobe, Marine Corps Mechanized Museum, and World War II Tracked Vehicle Museum.

CPHS is organized as a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation under Section 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code, and is classified as a Public Charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
