Event Details

24-hour team relay event for swimmers to raise money for 3 great charities

Your team's aim is to complete one mile on the hour every hour for 24 hours starting at 9am on Saturday 29th April 2017.

Teams of 4 or 6 swimmers only! (If you are a "billy no mates" and have no team, don't worry.....just send an email and we'll slot you into one with swimmers of a similar ability!)

One swimmer from each team will set off every hour on the hour; you must be in the water ready when the starting horn goes off.

During your rest period, we recommend you can eat, drink, visit the toilet, sleep, talk with friends or even funnily enough rest during rest periods but strictly no alcohol.

You may swim any stroke or combination of strokes.

Numbers in the 24 mile challenge are strictly limited. The organisers maintain the right to limit places and refuse entry for safety and organisational reasons.

Swimmers will be provided with:

  • Changing rooms
  • Toilet facilities & showers
  • Water safety & First aid
  • Event t-shirt, swimming cap, completion certificate and medal

Kristian O'Donovan

Hi. My name is Kristian O’Donovan. I’m a 37 year old, father of 5, living in the beautiful village of Glenbeigh on the Ring of Kerry, Ireland.

I will be completing three marathon swims in 2017 and have decided to do this for 3 wonderful charities, all of which are very important to me for a number of reasons.

My first charity is Down Syndrome Kerry. My brother-in-law, Cathal Griffin who has Down Syndrome, has never let this get in his way and is a constant source of inspriation for me. This wonderful charity has played a huge part in his successes and the work they do for many families across the county is fantastic.

My second charity is Glow Hearts 4 Crumlin. This is a local charity that was started by mothers, all of whom had children born with a congenital heart defect (CHD). They formed the group to raise funds for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin and to raise awareness of CHDs. My beautiful niece, Sadie, was born with a CHD and thanks to the great work of the nurses, doctors and surgeons in Crumlin she is fighting fit now.

My third charity is the Childhood Cancer Foundation. I don’t think there is a family in Ireland that hasn’t been affected by cancer. This charity funds research, play therapy and vital equipment used in St. John’s paediatric cancer ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin – a most worthy cause for the most vunerable in our society.

Having researched the charities, read some of the stories and seen first hand what these children have to go through… three swims are nothing compared to that. However, I intend on raising as much as I can regardless of “fundraising targets”.

Your support, monetary and morally, will be much appreciated.

ALL monies raised will go to the charities as I will be self-financing the flights, accommodation and entry fees.

The swims and dates are as follows:
Tampa Bay Marathon Swim (24 miles): 17th March 2017
Catalina Island (21 miles): 1st-2nd June 2017
20 Bridges Swim, New York (28 miles): 24th June 2017

Yours swimmingly
