Event description
For this years womxn's conference some of the topics we we will focus on will be Ecofeminism, Grassroot Activism, BIPOC Climate Activism.

About this event

The term ecofeminism was introduced in the 1970’s to address how the oppression of women is connected

to the exploitation of our planet. However, the movement created in the 70’s was a white-centered

movement, so it is our goal to emphasize the importance of having an intersectional ecofeminism to

provide a more inclusive movement that highlights the activist voices and work of the BIPOC

community. “While ecofeminism narrows in on gender, sexuality, and the patriarchy, intersectional

environmentalism creates space for all social injustices, including sexism,” writes Leah Thomas, Founder

of Intersectional Environmentalist.

This critical feminist theory often highlights the parallels of women’s issues with environmental issues. In

many ways, we often see both women and nature being depicted as chaotic and irrational; This

hierarchical and oppositional thinking helps to subjugate both. Ecofeminism advocates for the

dismantling of patriarchy to protect the planet and society. Ecofeminism also intertwines the two

movements, Environmentalism and Feminism, as to emphasize that we can’t liberate the environment

without liberating women. In addition, having an intersectional ecofeminism advocate for the women of

color who are disproportionately affected by climate change.

With this year’s annual Womxn’s Conference, it is GSEC’s mission to continue to provide an inclusive

and intersectional learning environment that highlights the theme of Ecofeminism. We would like to see

your ideas, information, and discussions on the Ecofeminist movement, especially focusing on

intersectionality.
