About this event

Mississippi Genealogical Society -- Virtual Winter Seminar 2022

In place of our regular January meeting, we are pleased to offer a virtual seminar with presenter J. Mark Lowe, FUGA.

J. Mark Lowe describes himself as a lifelong genealogist. He is a professional genealogist, author, and lecturer who specializes in original records and manuscripts throughout the South. Mark enjoys opportunities to share what he has learned over the years through YouTube, Webinars, and Institutes.

Beginning Saturday, January 15, 2022, four pre-recorded sessions will be available online and will remain available through Saturday, February 12, 2022. Additionally, there will be live Q&A sessions on Tuesday evenings, January 25th and February 1st, with a live, virtual fifth session on Saturday, February 5th. In addition to the sessions link, a link for handouts will be provided for all sessions.

Pre-recorded sessions (available January 15 – February 12, 2022):

The Migration Triangle: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee -- Discover what prompted our ancestors to follow the Migration Triangle and continue westward. Learn the paths they followed and the process for finding those elusive settlers.

Ready-Set-Plan! Developing a One-Step Research Plan -- Learn a simple technique for breaking down difficult research problems into manageable segments. Avoid creating blank spots that lead to misleading research. Learn to get more research accomplished while remaining on focus. Review your research findings, sharpen your techniques, evaluate your sources, and map a new course.

Is It Really Online? How to Find and Use Authentic Sources at Home or the Library -- Take advantage of new online resources while developing your research skills. Learn about simple techniques that can improve your methodology and accomplishment.

Expanding & Exploring Details from Published Resources -- Using the basic tools of family history research, discover additional family information with these records and writings. Learn the importance of analyzing the information that you find and realizing how important collateral/cluster line research is in helping to move you toward success in the genealogical process.

Virtual, live session – Saturday, February 5, 2022; 10:00 a.m. Central:

Looking Forward - What Will You Do Next? -- In every genealogist’s life the day arrives when no apparent progress is evident in furthering their research. This is the “brick wall” so often discussed and compared by researchers. Perhaps our brick wall was created by our own observations and can be used as a steppingstone for additional research.
