Join renowned calypsonian David "The King" Rudder and jazz vocalist Akua Allrich for the Cultural Academy of Excellence (CAFE)'s 21st Anniversary Gala: A Black Tie Affair, celebrating more than two decades of achievements in Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STREAM).  We invite you to an elegant evening of LIVE MUSIC and DANCING with an ONLINE/LIVE SILENT AUCTION, raising needed funds for our Prince George's County and Washington, D.C programs for students AGES 6-18.

The 21st Anniversary Gala is CAFE’s fundraising event, recognizing teachers, volunteers, and sponsors, who have conributed to helping youth flourish into their best selves.  Proceeds from the Gala directly support 2017 Carribbean Hurricane Victims & CAFE’s STREAM programs, including its Television, Creative Writing, and multi-award winning "Postive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra" and "Rhythm Starters"—2017 Virginia Beach PanFest Division winners.  Your SUPPORT of CAFE’s Gala will help transform young lives through innovative After-School and Saturday Academy STREAM programming.

ABOUT THE ENTERTAINMENT:

The Welcome for the Evening will be presented by CAFE's own Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra (PVYSO), a group that has been sharing its melodies nationally and internationally since 1996. In 2007, the Catalogue for Philanthropy ranked CAFE as “one of the best charities of the Greater Washington region,” adding to PVYSO's accomplishment of being one of the best percussion and music theory programs on the US East Coast.

David "The King" Rudder is one of the world’s leading calypsonians and composers! Hailing from the twin island nation of Trinidad & Tobago, Rudder will grace CAFE’s 21st Anniversary Gala with the localled renowned IMAGE BAND, blending lyrical poetry, rhythmic energy, and insightful commentary. Rudder's canon classics such as "The Hammer," "Bahia Girl," "Bacchanal Lady," "Rally ‘Round the West Indies," "Dus in Deh Face," "High Mas," and "Ganges Meets the Nile" comprise a core of steel bands’ repertoires worldwide, and his charisma is second to none.  

Jazz vocalist and DC-native Akua Allrich is a musician of astounding talent and crowd-pleasing passion. This polished singer, composer, and teacher has successfully etched out a place for her unique musical expression, ELECTRIFYING audiences in and around the nation’s capital with sold-out performances. In recent years, she has released three highly acclaimed albums: A Peace of Mine, Uniquely Standard, and Akua Allrich Live! Akua is often likened to legendary artists such as Oscar Brown, Jr., Miriam Makeba and Nina Simone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the attire for the evening?
The event attire is Black Tie. 

Are there ID, or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
The event is appropriate for All Ages.

Guests are asked to bring IDs to enter the majestic Organization of American States (OAS) Main Building. Minors must be accompanied by adults.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Closest Metro Station: Farragut West Metro station on the Orange/Blue lines. 
Take the 18th Street exit, and walk 10 mins to the OAS main building. 

OAS Main Building Parking: Limited free parking available - first come first served.

Metered Parking: Street parking is available. Parking is Free after 6PM.

What do you mean by Live/Online Auction?
Our Auction will actually go Online on October 15, 2017, and will transform into a LIVE Silent Auction at the event. There will be EXCLUSIVE in person bid items available only at the Gala.

What's the refund policy?
Since our event is a fundraiser, we kindly ask that all Refund Requests be made no less than 7 days before the event.
