Event description

Description

The Summit Against Racism has been held the Saturday after Martin Luther King's birthday for the past 19 years as a tribute to Dr. King and way to honor his legacy. The Summit was created in response to the death of Jonny Gammage, a Black businessman, and philanthropist who died from positional asphyxiation at the hands of white police during a “routine” traffic stop in 1995. This incident and the “not guilty” verdicts in court cases against the police inspired the founding of the Black and White Reunion, the Summit Against Racism and the Jonny Gammage Scholarship Fund.

The 20th Summit Against Racism will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary on Highland Avenue, hosted by the Metro-Urban Institute. Over the past 19 years, we have brought together thousands of people to find ways to collaborate in the struggle against racism, to work to eradicate police brutality and to build bridges among our communities. This is truly a unique gathering of people who are willing to work toward this end by attending workshops and discussions throughout the day. Last year more than 700 people attended!

For more information about the 20th Summit Against Racism, please visit summitagainstracism.org.

Proceeds from the registration go towards Summit costs and the Jonny Gammage Scholarship Fund.
