2026 AMWA Southwest Chapter John P. McGovern Award Lecture
Overview
2026 AMWA Southwest Chapter John P. McGovern Award Lecture
Join us in person or via Zoom for the exciting 2026 AMWA Southwest Chapter John P. McGovern Award Lecture.
This year, our speaker and McGovern Award recipient is Dr. Ricardo Nuila. Dr. Nuila is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He currently serves as a hospitalist and clinician at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. In his compelling book, “The People's Hospital: Stories and Lessons from a Safety Net Healthcare System,” Dr. Nuila describes his personal journey and patient experiences at Ben Taub.
Prior to his best-selling book, he authored multiple award-winning essays on the healthcare of vulnerable populations. In addition, Dr. Nuila has a long-standing interest in helping medical professionals explore the intersection between art, medicine and the humanities. To this end, he co-founded the Humanities Expression and Artists Lab (HEAL) at Baylor College of Medicine. This unique lab provides workshops that encourage faculty, residents, and post-doctorates to thoughtfully consider the patient experience using novel methods, such as art viewing and reflective writing, to advance patient advocacy and mitigate professional burnout.
We encourage you to join us in welcoming Dr. Nuila as he presents “The Doctor Will Listen Now: What Hippocrates, Galen, and Chekhov Tell Us About Connecting and Communicating.”
Don't miss out on this unique event that celebrates excellence and innovation in medical writing. See you there!
