Why Mobile, Alabama?

Presentation: The Story of Juneteenth - Where It All Began
On the 19 th of June in the year 1865, Union soldiers enforced emancipation for over 300,000 enslaved people in Texas, the last of the slaves freed in Confederate states more than two and a half years after the effective date of the Emancipation Proclamation. That historic event took place in Galveston, Texas and has come to be known as Juneteenth. Although Juneteenth is now a national holiday, few people know the whole story of how freedom finally came to enslaved Texans and how the celebration of emancipation evolved.
