WHAT YOU'LL ENJOY

"movers and shakers who dazzled audiences against all odds" - Chicago Tribune

"formidable dancers and choreographers of notable Chicago pedigrees" with a "powerful" message - See Chicago Dance

Our authentic, relevant, compelling art always speaks to the moment. The 2023 Spring Concert Series features the debut of two full-length pieces that we've made over the past few years:

  • SOUL REMEDY – May 18 & 27 - An energetic and joyful exploration of the Aesthetic of the Cool, a culturally specific phenomenon rooted in the Black American experience; a celebration of jazz and Black excellence without appropriation
  • Alongside SOUL REMEDY, we will feature ROOT and CULTURE LOOP, two other recent works by choreographer Monique Haley, that audiences have enjoyed for the past few years - made new each season by the dancers in our company
  • IDENTITY CITY – June 2 & 3 - A groundbreaking evening-length suite unpacking how gender is felt, expressed, received, challenged; a meditation on finding yourself and finding your place in the world - Please note June 2 is a preview performance

Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre has been bringing audiences across the country to its feet for the past year with work from our repertoire. Now our hometown gets to enjoy our new work in its final form - before it debuts anywhere else.

Celebrate our fascinating differences and inspiring common humanity in an exuberant artistic experience of professional dance and live music like no other!

All concerts approximately 90 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. Tickets $35-50; a Sponsorship Ticket includes a General Admission ticket plus a donation to support our equitable artist pay. Additional donations also possible when purchasing tickets and these funds also directly support our artists.

About the organizer

With our intense focus on personal narratives, the combined talents of our diverse collective of artists, and the multiple artistic languages with which we communicate, Cerqua Rivera engages audiences in magnetic human stories at once new and deeply familiar.

Our season extends spring through fall, culminating in a fall concert series where the year’s new work debuts in full production, performed by our Dance Ensemble and 1Jazz Band.

We produce a monthly summer series called Inside/Out – new work preview performances and discussions where audiences get involved in the art and get to know our artists.

We also perform in community and school settings, partnering with peer organizations and teaching young people about the many influences that have shaped dance in America. All told, in a normal year Cerqua Rivera engages nearly 10,000 people per year.

Our founding mission remains our focus: to fuse dance, music, and visual art to explore and celebrate contemporary society.
