2023 Book It! 5k

The Book It! 5K is a service initiative through the Honors Medical Scholars Society via the FSU College of Medicine founded in 2014. The mission statement of Book It! 5K is to contribute to improving child literacy rates in rural communities both locally and internationally. To do this, Book It! focuses on providing education materials, in the form of children’s books, to help provide materials to communities in need to enhance education and provide additional support. What started as a small idea by one Honors Medical Scholar has grown into a well-integrated service project through the Honors Medical Scholars Program that continues to expand and pursue additional funding opportunities each year. Currently, the main source of funding occurs from an annual 5k race in which funds are collected and returned back to the organization’s mission through the purchasing and distribution of children’s books. As the Book It! name develops, the organization hopes to expand its outreach by reaching more populations in need. We also hope to better understand the needs of the populations we aim to serve to better prepare for future initiatives. The race will start from the Integration Statue, located near the Union on Legacy walk,so please meet us there!
