Finley National Wildlife Refuge. Finley is well-known among birders as a stop-over for over-wintering and migrating aquatic birds. It is less well-known for its upland oak and prairie habitats. We will see how FNWR has been approaching management of these uplands (thinning, mowing, burning, planting, etc.) to improve habitat quality. The Refuge has promised some big machines for us to admire and covet. This will be a one mile walk with mild slopes on rough (mown) surfaces. Leader: Dave Hibbs. https://www.fws.gov/refuge/william-l-finley

Starker Forests: Site Preparation, Reforestation, and Fire: How they can work together to create your next forest. This tour will discuss various forms of site preparation and fuels reduction. We will see and discuss options to treat slash and use prescribed burns to reduce the risk of fire. We will hear about Starker’s lessons learned and experience in the field and how important early planning is to a successful operation. Leader: Ed Easterling. https://www.starkerforests.com/

Hull-Oakes Lumber. One the last commercial mills in the country using steam power to run the mill and cut large timbers up to 85’ long. The mill has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996. Hull-Oakes timbers can be found in the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland, the Ark Encounter in Kentucky, the USS Constitution in Boston, and the massive picnic table at Benton County Fairgrounds. The tour will be during hours of operation and attendees will need to be able to walk some stairs. Leaders: Darrell Oakes & Pat Boren. https://www.oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/hull_oakes_lumber_company_and_mill/#.YkXSV7hlBbU

Crestmont Farm Family - Ed Easterling

Saturday 8 AM – 2 PM

Transportation to site not provided. Driving directions provided with registration

The Crestmont Farm Family operation near Wren, Oregon brings together a broad mosaic of timber plantations, mixed-species forests, oak woodlands and savannas, riparian areas, critical habitat for endangered species, silvopasture, and grazed pastures. Crestmont's objectives include concurrently producing income while enhancing biodiversity for native plants, wildlife, and people. Join us for a field tour highlighting the results achieved from the unusual techniques and treatments Ed Easterling and his team use to integrate timber production and habitat management. We will see how they experiment to improve efficiency, productivity, and forest aesthetics. The tour will include a cumulative mile of walking on gentle, improved trails.
