Event description
One-day event to inspire young women to pursue degrees in the mathematical sciences and to honor female mathematicians that paved the way.

About this Event

Do you know of any talented young women who enjoy math?

We are interested in inviting some bright young minds to Sonoma State University on Saturday, March 6th, 2021, for our third annual Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics Day for Women, honoring Sonia Kovalevsky, a pioneer for women in mathematics. This year we will also be honoring Dr. Ruth Gonzalez, who is the first Latina to earn a PhD in Mathematics!

Sonia Kovalevsky was regarded as one of the world's best mathematicians in her time. Her amazing life included several firsts for women. Her stunning achievements include: becoming the first female member of the Russian Academy of the Sciences and the first modern European woman to attain full professorship; establishing the first significant result in the general theory of partial differential equations; winning the Prix Bordin prize; becoming an editor of a prominent mathematics journal in addition to being a gifted writer. Although society at that time did not allow women to succeed in academia, Sonia Kovalevsky had positive mentors in her life that supported her in pursuit of a career in mathematics.

Many young women do not excel in the sciences due to lack of role models or just because they don't know that careers in science are open to them!

This Sonia Kovalevsky Day is an opportunity to engage middle school and high school girls in a day of networking, mentoring, and fun! The day will begin at 9:00am with registration followed by a keynote lecture, games, hands-on mathematical activities and a career panel. This year marks the first annual Ruth Gonzalez Math Modeling Competition -- a fun competition for all ages and skill levels. There is also a special professional development session for teacher's only. Teacher's will earn professional development hours and receive a certificate of hours earned.

The event is completely free! You must pre-register by February 28th to particpate. Capacity is limited and this event will sell-out.
