This session is online access only. You will be sent a Zoom link for the training the day before the training is held. You must complete the pre and post tests.

Training description:This law enforcement fair and impartial policing and racial equity training model focuses on the following key content areas: social construction of race, racial and wealth disparities, history of systemic racism in the US, language access laws when working with Limited English Proficient (LEP) populations, federal and state laws related to race, ethnicity, and immigration status data collection, racial disparities in incarceration, suicide and mental health disparities negatively impacting youth and young adults, restorative justice, best practice models for improving race/ethnicity data identification and traffic stop race data collection, and culturally appropriate ways to interact and partner with diverse communities.

Trainer:

Maria ‘Mercedes’ Avila, PhD, MSW, MED provides consultation and training on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DE&I) and has trained more than 10,000 providers across 27 states and 150+ organizations (hospitals, community health centers, departments of health and mental health, mental health and disability agencies, family and youth serving organizations, higher education institutions, law enforcement, first responders, city officials, and schools). Since 2011, Dr. Avila has been invited to lead 60 national presentations and 150+ regional sessions on topics related racial equity, diversity, equity and inclusion. Dr. Avila is a member of the Vermont Governor's Children and Family Council for Prevention Programs and the Vermont Green Mountain Care Board nominating committee. In 2020, Gov. Phil Scott appointed Dr. Avila as a public member of the state Governor's Racial Equity Task Force and in 2021 US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Xavier Becerra appointed her as public member of the Federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. Dr. Avila has received 14 service, research and teaching awards for her equity work in Vermont and nationally.
