Join the Bowen Center to honor those whose efforts in their communities epitomize the legacy of our founder, Mrs. Emma L. Bowen.

About this event

The Emma L. Bowen Humanitarian Medal is presented to individuals who provide exceptional leadership and unfailing dedication to communities.

Their efforts on the behalf of others epitomize the legacy of our founder, the late Mrs. Emma L. Bowen. Previous honorees include Tony Award winning choreographer Bill T. Jones, NBC New York Meteorologist Janice Huff, New York City Mayor David Dinkins, Congressman Charles Rangel, Businessman and Philanthropist Mark Goldsmith, Opioid Specialist Dr. Melissa Freeman and the late Percy E. Sutton. The Humanitarian Awards Virtual Gala is an important fundraiser that enables the Bowen Center to continue its life-sustaining services, such as its Therapeutic Preschool, food pantry, social services and mental health services for children and adults alike.

2021 Humanitarians

The Reverend Al Sharpton is an internationally renowned civil rights leader, founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN). Hailed by former President Barack Obama as a “champion for the downtrodden,” Reverend Sharpton is a disciple of the teachings of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and has been at the forefront of the modern civil rights movement for nearly a half of a century.

Cynthia Bissett Germanotta is President of Born This Way Foundation, which she co-founded with her daughter Lady Gaga in 2012. Under Cynthia’s leadership, the Foundation has connected with tens of thousands of young people across the country and around the world, launched innovative youth-focused programming, and conducted cutting edge research to improve the understanding of mental wellness.

2021 Community Leadership Award

The Emma L. Bowen Community Leadership Award is presented to individuals and organizations whose dedication to their community has been invaluable. Recipients lead by example and work towards the betterment of their communities.

US Representative Adriano Espaillat had proudly represented New York's Thirteenth Congressional District since 2016. He is the first Dominican American to serve in the US House of Representatives. Through his House committee assignments and caucus leadership positions, Representative Espaillat helps to advance and amplify legislative priorities and accomplishments that aim to improve the lives of families of the people of New York and the nation.
