HOSTED BY: The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the George Mason University School of Business
The 2021 Housing Symposium will bring together industry professionals, policy experts, housing advocates and neighbors to highlight our successes, learn what neighboring jurisdictions are doing, and develop new creative solutions for meeting the increasing need for housing that is affordable to residents at all levels of the income spectrum.

Agenda
9:00 - 11:00: Welcome and Opening Remarks; Plenary Discussion
Several of our local and federal elected officials will highlight the tremendous need for affordable housing in Fairfax County and across the Washington Metropolitan area. This session will include a panel discussion with leaders in our local health, education and economic development communities to introduce the critical importance of housing as a foundation for a strong economy, healthy community and thriving educational system.
11:00 – 11:15 am: Break
11:15 – 12:30 pm: Session #1 - Affordable Housing: A Prescription for Community Health
A panel of public- and private-sector leaders in the healthcare industry will focus on the social determinants of health and how housing plays a key role in community wellness. Discussions will also feature how affordable housing is important for the health of older adults and individuals with disabilities, and how anchor institutions can play a critical role in community health by supporting the development of affordable housing.
12:30 – 1:30 pm: Break
1:30 – 2:30 pm Session #2 - Affordable Housing: Making the Grade for Educational Success
Speakers will highlight best practices and research on effective ways that affordable housing can support K-12 learning. Discussions will also focus on how higher education institutions can support students and strengthen local communities by supporting the development and preservation of affordable housing.
2:30– 2:45 pm: Break
2:45 – 3:45 pm: Session #3 - Affordable Housing: It’s Everyone’s Job
Local officials and leaders in our local business community will discuss housing as a key ingredient for growing a robust and strong economy. This session will also focus on examples of how private sector businesses - large and small - can take an active role in supporting the development of affordable housing to ensure that workers can live and work in the community of their choice.
3:45 –4:00 pm: Closing Remarks - One Fairfax: We Need the People Who Need Affordable Housing
Dranesville District Supervisor, and Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Housing Committee, John Foust will conclude the day's activities with a recap of key points and next steps in advancing affordable housing as a critical means of supporting a strong, growing and diverse community.
