2020: A clear view of Challenges in the MDS Process

1. Define 3 purposes of the Minimum Date Set.

2. Understand the basic principle of the Patient Driven Payment Model.

3. List 3 conditions/deficits you strive to capture for reimbursement that could negatively impact your QMs.

Cannabis Use in Senior Living: Where we are and Where we are going

1. Explain the history of CBD and hemp.

2. Discuss cannabis-based approved medications in the US.

3. Explore the marketing and efficacy of CBD.

4. Discuss the legality of the use of CBD in the nation.

5. Understand the status of medical marijuana laws in the US.

6. Learn how providers can address potential CBD and marijuana use in their communities.

Detecting and Deterring Diversion

1.Understand the risks and safety issues associated with diversion.

2. Be aware of the warning signs for diversion.

3. Know how to prevent diversion within your facility.

4. Execute prompt diversion detection.

5. Understand the proper internal and external response to a diversion incident.

Pharmacologic Management of Cognitive, Behavioral, & Psychiatric Symptoms in Dementia

1. Know when implementation of pharmacologic treatment strategies are appropriate.

2. Understand which medication classes are recommended for which behaviors.

3. Be aware of the risks associated with pharmacologic management of BPSD.

Non-Pharmacologic Management of Cognitive, Behavioral, & Psychiatric Symptoms in Dementia

1. Be aware of the direct and indirect interventions for BPSD.

Speaker Bios:




Rosanna Benbow, RN, CCM, CIC, DNS-CT, RAC-CT, MDS Consultant

Rosie has extensive experience in roles such as Certified Nurses Aid, Medical Records, MDS Coordinator, Director of Nursing, Case Mix Auditor, MDS Consultant and Managed Care Specialist.
Rosie is a Registered Nurse with 20 years experience in LTC. She is certified as a Resident Assessment Coordinator and Director of Nursing Services through AANAC/AADNS. She is also a Certified InterACT Champion and Certified Case Manager. She is seasoned in teaching accurate assessment in accordance with the CMS RAI Manual, managing Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement for up to 20 Skilled Nursing Facilities in Indiana/Florida, and coordinating Managed Care relations/contracts.



Rob Leffler, RPh, Vice President of Clinical Operations

Rob Leffler is the Vice President of Clinical Services for PCA Pharmacy, a long-term care pharmacy that serves over 33,000 residents in 12 states. Rob graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Butler University. He has spent the majority of his career in long-term care as a consultant pharmacist, running long-term care pharmacies and leading clinical teams in the care of residents. Rob has spoken for many LTC health care organizations at their live meetings and through webinars. He has also been a member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists for 25 years and serves on their Board of Directors as the Midwest Representative.




April Inlow, MSN, RN, Nurse Consultant

April Inlow attended the University of Arizona where she obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing. She has been a nurse for over 14 years and has worked in a variety of settings including long term care, critical care, home health, and clinics. She has extensive experience with IV’s including peripheral, central, and implanted ports. She is a member of the Infusion Nurses Society and the American Nurses Association. She is a certified TB instructor and Qualified Medication Aide instructor in Indiana, and holds certificates in Quality and Safety through the IHI, and Infection Prevention through the CDC. April is currently a nurse consultant for PCA Pharmacy in Indiana, and has been working in this position since spring of 2018.


Monica Ott, MD

Dr. Monica Ott is a geriatrician in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is the CCM (chronic care management) medical director for Optum in the Indiana market. Dr. Ott is a CMD (certified medical director). She has been involved with the Indiana chapter of AMDA for 10 years including as president, secretary, and treasurer. Dr. Ott is a popular speaker on topics such as dementia with behavior management, palliative care, and nursing home care.



Patty Piechocki, CTRS, QMCP, CDCP, CMDCP, Program Director for the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care

Patty Piechocki is the Program Director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care. Patty is a Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist who has worked in the memory care field for over 24 years. Patty is certified through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification; the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America as a Certified Dementia Care Partner, an Expressive Arts in Long Term Care Train the Trainer through the University of Indianapolis and is a Certified Montessori in Dementia Care Professional by the International Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. In November 2019, Patty and Angel received training by the Vivium “Dementia Village” consulting team as they embrace the vision, and help create the foundation of the new Milton Village in Roseland, IN, in the summer of 2021.
