About the Event:

Seniors graduating from the West Virginia GEAR UP program are invited to attend the 2020 Governor's Honors Symposium for West Virginia GEAR UP Graduates.

This event is intended to honor the accomplishments of GEAR UP graduates and their families.  A gallery walk during the reception will provide networking opportunities to discuss their plans for postsecondary education and training with GEAR UP staff, financial aid professionals, our new GEAR UP transition and first-year staff, and college representatives from many of our WV colleges and universities. 

Participants will receive a special GEAR UP medallion to wear during their high school graduation and will be recognized by state officials. 

Graduates may bring as many guests as they wish.


Schedule:

12:00 - Doors Open

12:00-1:30 - Graduates will have time to visit the Financial Aid Gallery Walk   

12:30-1:30 Graduates who are being recognized MUST check in between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.

2:00 - Ceremony begins

3:45 - Reception

4:30 - Event ends

What should graduates wear?

Graduates should wear dress clothes - what you might wear to church or a school awards ceremony. 

 

Who can attend?
12th graders graduating from Bluefield High School, Hannan High School, Meadow Bridge High School, Midland Trail High School, Mingo Central High School, Montcalm High School, Nicholas County High School, Oak Hill High School, PikeView High School, Point Pleasant High School, Princeton Senior High School, Richwood High School, Scott High School, Sherman High School, Summers County High School, Tug Valley High School, Van High School, Wahama High School, Webster County High School, Westside High School, Wirt County High School and Wyoming County East High School. Graduates may also bring as many guests as they would like. 

 

What should attendees expect?
Graduates will be called on stage and recognized individually for their accomplishments. Graduates will pose for photos with state officials and receive a medallion to wear during their high school graduation. During the ceremony, GEAR UP staff members will provide information about college and offer special presentations highlighting the work of GEAR UP students. After the ceremony, attendees are invited to attend a reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres (appetizers).  GEAR UP staff, financial aid professionals, and college representatives will be available to answer any questions students and families have about pursuing any form of higher education or job skills training programs.

Yes - this event is free to attend.

 

What is the registration deadline?
Students can register by returning the reply card included in the invitation packet (mailed directly to students' homes) no later than Friday, March 27th or by completing this online registration by Thursday, April 2nd. 

 

Where is the nearest available parking? Some questions for consideration: 

Parking will be available in the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center garage (600 spaces).  A parking pass for that garage will be included in the invitation.  Parking is also available a block away at the nearby Town Center Mall, but parking for this event cannot be validated at that facility.  The Town Center Mall parking costs $1.75 per vehicle. 

 

Will a meal be provided?  

While we are not serving a full meal during this event, we will be serving a wide variety of heavy hors d'oeuvres (appetizers) during the reception immediately following the ceremony.
