October 29, 2019: WESTWARD HO

Hang onto to your (cowboy) hats and get ready for a lively evening of beautiful music inspired by America’s wide open spaces. Selections include Sunrise from Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite, excerpts from Copland’s Rodeo and the overture to Williams’ The Cowboys. As part of the Meridian Symphony’s 30th anniversary celebration, former artistic director Richard Roller returns to the stage to conduct selections from the musical Oklahoma. You’ll also hear Boise State University music professor Dr. Derek Ganong perform Tartini’s Trumpet Concerto in D with the orchestra.

December 7, 2019: HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (two performances, 2 pm and 7:30 pm)

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the season with a concert that is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. The program includes Anderson’s A Christmas Festival, Hess’s A Christmas Overture, Amundson’s haunting Sola Gratia and Night of Joy, composed by the orchestra’s own Dan Smith. Special guests the Centennial High School Choir perform Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus with the orchestra and several other pieces, including Hayes’ Master in the Hall and Rutter’s For the Beauty of the Earth. Rumor has it that special guests from the North Pole may also make a surprise appearance (Hint: Ho Ho Ho).

March 7, 2020: HOW ‘SUITE’ IT IS!

A musical suite is a collection of short pieces, oftentimes dance movements. In this delightful program, we “suite-en” the mix by performing excerpts from a number of famous orchestral suites, including Dance of the Swans from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Gliere’s Russian Sailor’s Dance from The Red Poppy, Stravinsky’s Berceuse and Finale from The Firebird and Copland’s Finale from Appalachian Spring. Former artistic director Tom Phelps conducts In the Hall of the Mountain King and other selections from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite as part of our yearlong 30th anniversary celebration.

April 25, 2020: JUST FOR STARTERS

This is a concert of first courses! From Beethoven to Bernstein and Renieke to Rossini, we perform the overtures of a number of beloved and famous compositions. The program includes Beethoven’s Overture to Creatures of Prometheus, Sullivan’s Overture to HMS Pinafore, Bernstein’s Overture to West Side Story, Rossini’s Overture to The Italian in Algeria and other favorites. In addition, the junior and senior division winners of the orchestra’s annual Young Artists Competition perform solos with the orchestra.

(All concerts listed above are at 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial High School Performing Arts Center, 12400 W. McMillan Road, Boise ID)
