Event description

Description

On Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 6:00pm-9:00pm, Mental Health America of Georgia (MHA of GA) will be hosting its’ Year End Conversations Reception to have an open and honest conversation about mental health and the impact of trauma on our children in foster care. Guests will engage in table top discussions on trauma and effective ways to improve protective factors and build resilienc for youth. Guests will learn from our partner organizations about services and supports for children and their families. Guests will enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts and the beautiful view overlooking Midtown from the 18th Floor at the Nelson Mullins Law Firm in Atlantic Station.

As of May 2019, there were 13,718 children in Georgia’s Foster Care System. Many children in foster care have been exposed to some form of trauma. The very act of being put in foster care can be a traumatic experience due to losing their birth family and often friends, neighbors, teachers, and everything that is familiar. But many children in foster care have experienced more than one form of trauma or repeated trauma, the lasting effects of which should be acknowledged and understood by families. Mental Health America of Georgia offers Outreach Wellness Learning (OWL) Seminars to families across the state to learn about the impact of trauma and how to build resiliency for youth. MHA of GA was able to train over 1600 individuals in mental health and trauma last year. Proceeds will support mental health awareness training for foster parents, guardians and biological family members to understand trauma related symptoms and mental well-being.
