Description

The recent opioid epidemic has once again brought addiction and addiction recovery to the forefront of public concern. While health care professionals continue to enhance and expand treatment services, many Americans go without the care they so desperately need. Approximately 22.7 million Americans (8.6%) needed treatment for problems related to drugs or alcohol in 2013, yet treatment facilities only treated about 2.5 million (.9%) people that year (National Institute of Drug Abuse). These figures do not account for other addictions such as tobacco, gambling, food, compulsive sexual behavior, or internet gaming disorder. Health care professionals have responded to the complexities of identifying, researching, and treating a variety of addictions across diverse populations. Now more than ever, other professionals such as educators, employers, and law enforcement, are better prepared through training to interact in their professional capacity with those suffering from an addiction. Likewise, because family structures and friendship are negatively impacted by those with addictions, the general public is actively seeking information on identifying the signs of addiction, supporting treatment, and understanding the complexities of addiction and recovery.

The forum will provide more than 12 breakout sessions and two keynote presentations: Dr. Kirk Moberg, Executive Medical Director of the UnityPoint Health Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery and Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine and Robert Carty, LCSW, CADC, CCJP, Director of Clinical Services at Chicago's Hazelden-Betty Ford Foundation
