Full-time recruit basic training standards

The following courses represent the minimum standards that the students at the Vermont Police Academy must achieve prior to graduating from the course. Each candidate will have three attempts at each event, and must pass twice.

  1. The first event will be fired from the 5-yard line on a VPA-QT target. The event will be timed with a shot timer. The shooter will begin from the interview position or hands down and, on the sound of the timer, will have 2 seconds to draw their weapon and fire 1 round into the 9-inch circle indicated to the right by the red outline.

  2. The second event will also be fired from the 5-yard line at the same target with the same scoring area. The shooter will begin at the high ready position. The event will be timed with a shot timer. At the sound of the timer, the shooter will have 1 second to fire one round into the 9-inch circle.

  3. The third event will also be fired from the five-yard line at the same target with the same 9-inch circle. The shooter will begin with one round loaded into their weapon and at least one round in a magazine in their magazine pouch. The shooter will begin this event at the high ready position. The event will be timed with a shot timer. At the sound of the timer, the shooter will have 4 seconds to fire the one round in their weapon into the 9-inch circle, perform a slide lock reload, and then fire the two rounds into the 9-inch circle All three must hit in 9-inch circle. This is a split time event, and the time is counted between the two shots.

  4. The fourth event will also be fired from the 5-yard line at the same target with the same scoring area. The shooter will begin with five live rounds and one inert round loaded into their magazine. The inert round cannot be first or last in the magazine. On the sound of the timer, the shooter will fire all five rounds into the 9-inch circle of the target, clearing the malfunction when it occurs. The split time for the malfunction must be 2.5 seconds or less, and all five shots must hit the 9-inch circle.

  5. The fifth event will also be fired from the 5 yard line using a VPA-QT target. The shooter will begin at the high ready position. The event will be timed with a shot timer. At the sound of the timer, the shooter will have 4 seconds to fire 5 rounds into the high center of mass area of the target and 1 round into the head of the target. The high center of mass area is represented on the target by a 9-inch circle directly below the head of the target. The head shot must be within the grey 6-inch circle.

  6. The sixth event will be fired from the 7-yard line using a VPA-QT target. The shooter will begin with 6 rounds loaded into their weapon. On the command to fire, the shooter will have an unlimited amount of time to fire 6 rounds into the 6 inch head circle on the target.
