Gerd Wessolek a Professor and Chair of the Soil Protection Group at the Technische Universität in Berlin, Germany. His research focuses on urban soil physics and urban hydrology. Initiating “SoilArt” activities, he tries to give soils and soil science a broader exposure to the wider community through paintings, presentations, books, movies, exhibitions, and calendars.

Porch Chat with scientist Ed Landa and WATERWASH for a Swimmable Bronx River, artist Lillian Ball, whose work is part of Field to Palette. Environments such as these can showcase the varied and exciting processes that occur in the soil.

Their their collaborative project, the Urban Soils Room at Governors Island, offers an opportunity to look deeply into the soils we are standing on. We will share what we are learning about the history recorded by Laguardia soil on Governors Island. Plus, we’ll investigate RSS soils on the new and improved Soil Web app, and learn more about this valuable tool.
