Event Details

Join the University of Maryland Extension Carroll County Master Gardeners and learn a variety of topics about vegetable gardening!

Courses are structured for the beginning gardener and highlight the basics you will want to know to have a successful gardening season.  This seminar is perfect for the first time gardener, a homeowner that is adding a new garden to an undeveloped area, or for anyone that would like to develop a "green thumb".  The mission of the UME Grow It, Eat It! program  is to help Marylanders improve human and ecological health by growing their own food using sustainable gardening practices. 

Sign up for the whole series or choose from individual class days. Each class-day cost is $10, which includes one set of materials and resources for the course topic. 

If you need special assistance to participate in this program, please contact the University of Maryland Extension Carroll County Office 2 weeks prior to each scheduled event.

Class Schedule and Topics:

 

Tuesday January 22nd 6:30pm-8:45pm

Getting Started: "Why, Where & How" 

Topic 1: Join Master Gardeners to learn  considerations when selecting the best site for your gardens. Explore concepts like "micro environments" and learn how they may change your gardening game-plan! 

Topic 2: Discuss the pro's and con's of different gardening approaches (container, raised bed etc.) Find out which method is going to work best for your location--and your lifestyle!


Tuesday January 29nd 6:30pm-8:45pm

Achieving Healthy Soils with Amendments and Composting Basics  

Topic 3: Get the "dirt" on healthy soil. We will reveal the tricks to knowing the soil you have and how to make it an appropriate foundation for your favorite plants. Learn to identify different soil types and get an overview of how to use your soil test results to choose the right amendments.

Topic 4: Get the facts about the Do's and Don'ts for successful composting and explore some composting setup strategies

Seed Starting and Perennial Planting

Topic 5: Anyone can learn how to propagate their own plants with Master Gardener, Joan Epler's tricks for seed starting! Find out about her great hacks to those expensive seed starting kits and learn about the proper planting times for your favorite veggies. 
Topic 6: Master Gardener, Robert Holmes, shares his Carroll County experiences with those perennial food plants you've always wanted to try--but just didn't know where to start! Discuss the pro's, con's and considerations of perennial food plants like: horseradish, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, pawpaws, aronia, goumis and much more!

Supporting Your Growing Plants and Success with Succession Planting

Topic 7: Learn sustainable techniques for tackling weeds and helpful tips to perform all season long to promote a healthy harvest.

Topic 8: Don't let your garden fall flat after you harvest your first crop! Let Master Gardener, Kay Sedlak, explain the value of succession planting, so you can enjoy harvest after harvest all season long!


Tuesday February 19th 6:30pm-8:45pm

Garden Threats: Bugs and Diseases that Threaten Your Crops, and How to Deal with Them

Topic 9: Learn to tell the difference between garden pest and garden protectors! Master Gardeners will help you identify the good bugs and the bad bugs so you can help nature do the pest control in your garden! Consider tips to invite pollinators to your food crops so you can have the levels of pollination necessary to have a great harvest.

Topic 10: Get a lesson in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and learn how to sustainably manage pest in your garden. Learn to identify common garden diseases and have a plan to manage for them.

Best Crops for Carroll County 

Topic 11: Learn everything there is to love about heirloom varieties of tomatoes from Master Gardener, Kay Sedlak

Topic 12: Everywhere has it's challenges when it comes to growing the right plant in the right place! Let Master Gardener, Marty Hankins share her top picks for the best crops to grow in Carroll County vegetable gardens.
